Golden Girl "Sophia" Dies

A funny and very sarcastic Golden Girl is gone. Estelle Getty has passed away at the age of 84.

She had been suffering from advanced dementia and died this morning at her Hollywood Blvd. home at about 5:30 AM.

Born Estelle Scher to Polish immigrants in New York, Getty fell in love with theater when she saw a vaudeville show at age 4.

Getty started doing one-liners in her standup act during her teens at a Catskills hotel in New York. Female comedians did not do well in those days so she bombed.

Not giving up, Getty kept trying at a career in show business. Although her parents supported her efforts, her dad also insisted that she had something to fall back on. He made her learn office skills, just in case.

In a statement by Bea Arthur, she said, "Our mother-daughter relationship was one of the greatest comic duos ever, and I will miss her."
